AMD FirePro™ S-Series server cards are compatible with VMware ESXi and Horizon View, enabling IT to create virtualized PCs for Knowledge Workers, and virtualized workstations for more specialized Power Users. With a VMware ESXi hypervisor installed, IT can outfit a rack or blade server featuring multiple PCIe® slots with the same number of AMD FirePro™ S-Series server cards, and share this single host server across multiple virtual machines in a one-GPU-to-many user model (vSGA) or a one-GPU-per-user model (vDGA).

VMware vSGA

AMD FirePro™ S-Series server cards support VMware vSGA technology, enabling IT to create multiple virtual machines (VM) that access and share physical GPUs installed locally in the ESXi hosts to provide hardware-accelerated 3D graphics to multiple virtual desktops.

The ideal users for vSGA deployments are Knowledge Workers, working with 2+ displays, using graphics design and vector graphics, and Aero glass effects, or Power Users working with 2+ displays and review CAD designs, make occasional edits and primarily reviews designs for accuracy.

With support for vSGA, AMD FirePro S-series server cards give demanding Horizon View users a true desktop experience that provides 3D capabilities and graphics support they expect. Users moving from physical desktops or notebooks to Horizon View shouldn’t have to lower expectations their expectations when it comes graphics support and visual responsiveness.

The following AMD FirePro™ products are certified for Vmware ESXI 5.5 U1 and 5.5, and Horizon View 5.2 and 5.3

VMware vDGA

AMD FirePro™ S-Series server cards support VMware vDGA technology, enabling IT to dedicate the full power of one server card to one virtual machine and support Power Users who need more advanced graphics performance. These Power Users spend most of their day manipulating larger models and data sets and need more memory and graphics performance.

AMD plans to develop and release optimized drivers for VMware vDGA. When combined with an updated Horizon View agent from VMware, full remote graphics performance will be enabled on AMD FirePro products. Optimized drivers are planned for release later in 2014.
